A Foodie’s Paradise: The San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival

Tacos, elaborate meals and rows and rows of white tents. No, I’m not talking about that thing that happens when you go on Spring Break in Cabo and accidentally end up at a Mexican drug lord’s mansion. I’m clearly talking about the Lexus Grand Tasting event at the San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival! Couple the Grand Tasting with the annual Taco TKO competition and good luck fitting into your work pencil skirt once the week is over.

I might have gained five pounds after this week alone and I might still be feeling the repercussions of drinking literally 7 gallons of wine, but I must say that this week of events is without a doubt the best week of the year. At Taco TKO, restaurants and taco shops from all over San Diego put their best fish tacos forward in an effort to win the votes of the people.

Multiple tacos enter the ring, one taco leaves.

Pair that with unlimited craft beer and you have yourself one hell of a Taco Tuesday.

While Taco TKO is a fantastic event, it’s especially amazing because it stretches your stomach out for the main event: the Lexus Grand Tasting.

The Grand Tasting is where restaurants from all over San Diego put their best dishes forward in an effort to win “Chef of the Fest”, recognition, props and much more! It’s also where hundreds of wineries gather to offer tastes of their delicious wine that I definitely carefully tasted (but just between you and I, if the wine was red, I drank it).

Some of my absolute fave tastes this year were from Ironside and Común (duh), as well as Sally’s Seafood on the Water and Jake’s Del Mar. What can I say? It was hot. Apparently I was in a refreshing seafood mood.

While I stuck to seafood and wine (mostly), I will say that it’s important to go into the Fest with a plan of attack. Know what spots you absolutely NEED to try and get there early before the lines for popular restaurants get too long. Early entry is 100% worth it, and be careful not to get too hung-up on one section of tastes! Pacing yourself is totally worth it and skipping some tents is okay!

All in all, this year’s Grand Tasting was filled with food, drink and amazing views that can’t be beat. Do yourself a favor and prep yourself for next year NOW.
